Looking for an easy, last minute homemade Mother’s Day gift? Here are 2 versions of a beautiful button art project that you might even be able to make with supplies you have on hand. We chose to use a square 12×12 artist canvas, but you can use a wooden plaque or even plain card stock. We came up with 2 different versions depending on the amount of time and buttons you have on hand. But both versions will make a beautiful Mother’s Day button heart gift.

Version 1: Mother’s Day Button Heart Outline (With the Word Mom)
Supplies Needed:
-Artist’s Canvas or Wooden Plaque (Heavy card stock will work too)
-Glue
-Pencil
-Heart Tracer using plain paper (Optional) and scissors
-Buttons (Pick shades of one color or a variety of colors. We used pink.)
Steps:
1.Take a piece of paper and fold it in half. Draw half of a heart and cut out on the lines. This will give you a symmetrical heart. Use it as a heart tracer if you desire.
2.Taking a pencil, draw (or trace) a heart on your canvas. using the same pencil, have your child write the word Mom (or Nana or Grandma) in the middle.
3. Taking one section at a time, take the glue and squeeze the glue and trace the pencil lines with it. Don’t use too much or it will become very messy. We started with the inside word.
4. Take the buttons and place carefully on the glue lines. It will squirt through the buttons a bit, but should be fine as it dries clear. However, sometimes it may be necessary to wipe up excess glue.
5. Let glue dry. Sign and date your project and you are done!
Version 2: Mother’s Day Button Heart (Filled In)
Supplies Needed:
-Canvas or Wooden Plaque (Heavy card stock will work too)
-Glue
-Foam Brush
-Paper Plate
-Pencil
-Heart Tracer using plain paper (Optional) and scissors
-Buttons (Pick shades of one color or a variety of colors)
Steps:
1. Follow the same steps as above, drawing a pencil heart outline and gluing the outside lines in small sections and lining with a variety of button sizes. Let it dry.
2. Next, pour glue on a paper plate and use the foam brush to spread the glue in small sections inside the heart. Make sure you do small sections at a time and work quickly as the glue dries fast!
3. Fill in the heart with a variety of shades (or colors) of buttons, being careful to fit them close to each other. A variety of sizes of buttons also help fill in the gaps.
4. Let your heart dry. Have your children write messages around the heart and sign and date the canvas.
Simple right? The kids loved making this project and I think it makes a beautiful kid made work of art!
